Types of Data Cables used In Offices Today
These are special cables that can be used as a means of data transmission from one electronic device to another, mostly used with computers and hand held devices. There are data cables used for telecommunication needs, and for data transmission from one device to another. Data cables are mainly made of copper and fiber optics. These are:
- Coax
- Optic Cables
- Twisted pair data cables
Coax Data cables
These are also known as coaxial data cables, and are mainly used to transmit high frequency signals over old computer networks. These cables are characterized by a solid insulated wire mostly covered with a metallic foil. The whole packaging is then insulated with a plastic cover. These are mainly used for TV signals, RG or RG-11 and RG-58 for Ethernet. A BNC connector is required to make this cable useable.
Fiber Optic Cables
Fiber optic cables are used for fast internet and telephone connections over wide networks. These cables employ light transmission to transmit data signals through reflection. These consist of two parts; Core and cladding. These two parts work hand in hand to enhance data efficiency and prevents data refraction. This is the most expensive of all data communication cables today, and the most efficient ones.
Fiber optics cables can be used for two purposes, TV transmission and Data Transmission needs. SC connectors are required for cable TV, while ST connectors are needed for data transmission and networking. These cables provide excellent connection as they are resistant to electromagnetic interference.

Twisted pair data cables
These are the most commonly used data cables for networking in many offices. They are however limited to an approximate length of 300feet before data degradation can be experienced. A repeater is thus needed if one needs to transmit data over longer distances. Twisted pair cables are made of copper with a plastic insulation, whereby one cable is used to transmit data signal, while the other is used to for grounding to prevent data interference. These can be used for both voice and internet needs in an office.
The other types of data cables used in offices today include FireWire and USB cables. These are used to connect external data storage devices with a computer only.
